Difference Between USB-A, USB-C and PD Chargers
Retail staff get asked this daily. Here's a straightforward explanation of USB-A, USB-C and PD you can actually use at the counter.
'USB-A', 'USB-C' and 'PD' get used interchangeably by customers, but they describe three different things — a connector shape, another connector shape, and a charging protocol. Here's the difference in plain terms.
USB-A: The Older, Rectangular Port
USB-A is the familiar flat, rectangular port found on older chargers, power banks and car chargers. It's a physical connector shape, not a charging speed — a USB-A charger can be slow or fast depending on the circuitry inside it.
USB-C: The Newer, Reversible Port
USB-C is the smaller, oval, reversible connector now standard on most new Android phones, iPads, and increasingly iPhones. Like USB-A, it's just a connector shape — but USB-C ports are what's required to deliver PD fast charging.
PD: The Charging Protocol, Not the Port
PD (Power Delivery) is a charging standard that lets a compatible charger and cable negotiate higher wattage safely — this is what actually makes charging faster, not the connector shape itself. A '25W PD charger' means the device speaks the PD protocol and can deliver up to 25W when paired with a PD-compatible cable and phone.
So Which Does a Customer Need?
- Older phone with USB-A cable in the box → a USB-A fast charger
- Newer Android phone or iPad with USB-C cable → a PD charger (25W-65W depending on the device)
- Charging a phone and a laptop from one charger → a dual-port GaN charger with USB-A + USB-C
