Gallium Nitride (GaN) is a semiconductor material that replaces the silicon traditionally used inside chargers. It conducts electricity more efficiently and generates less heat, which allows a much smaller housing at the same or higher wattage.

A 65W GaN charger can fit into roughly the footprint that used to be needed for a 30W silicon-based charger. That efficiency gain is also why GaN chargers can safely support dual USB-A + USB-C output at higher combined wattage without overheating.
